Archive Delimas Pt. 1

I am so surprised that we even have an Archive section. It has laid dormant for years, without a single page or hint of cover. Now we have one, and boy is it growing!

Over the past couple of weeks we've updated and completed the first step in our Archive section. We've uploaded the covers and at least five spreads from each year from 1990 to 2008. Roughly, we've uploaded about 170MB of JPG's for these different books. And we're just over the five-spread preliminary goal. So, you can imagine how big these pages will be.

This isn't abnormal, we expect it, but we didn't expect our website to have a 200MB limit. Since we're a "cavern site," a server dedicated to departmental pages, we have that limit as default.

Now we're working with IT to increase that limit. Also, we want to incorporate some fancy SEO features for these pages, and that doesn't happen with static JPGs. So, the next logical step is to turn these physical pages into OCR-ready PDF's. But we can't just plug those files into our javascript interface.

Issuu seems to be the answer, and we're incorporating it over the long run. First, we have to figure out if it will truly work for us, if it's adaptable to our large amount of archives, and if we can get the correct PDF's scanned.

That's my update, stay tuned for some innovation on the Archive front. Again, remember that I'm blown away by the fact that we have the section anyway!

Deadline Two!

Now that we're back to school, it's back to work for the Razorback staff! We are about to hand out our second deadline, which we only have a month to complete. Yikes!

We are also getting ready to do a round of individual photos, RSO group photos, a campus-wide student poll, and all kinds of fun stuff. Big things going on down in the basement of Kimpel!

But just to pique your interest, I thought I would give you a glimpse at some of the things we are planning for our next deadline:
-Homecoming
-Soccer
-Men's Cross Country
-Women's Cross Country
-Volleyball
-A story about our new coach Bobby Petrino and his first year here
-Miss UA 2009
-A story about the Hognapping! The statue in the Gardens was stolen for about a month, then mysteriously returned wrapped in black garbage bags.
-Pomfret hall plans a game of Muggle Chess, like in Harry Potter. Freakin sweet!

So a lot of sports, a few other cool things and some stuff I haven't even divulged.
Stay tuned for more updates! And check out the spreads we've already put up in the Sneak Peek or on our Facebook page and leave us comments telling us what you think!

Get A Sneak Peek!

Well Deadline One is done, which means we now can offer you a sneak peek into the 2009 Razorback! You can check out some of our staffers' hard work here or you can check them out on our Facebook page and leave comments about what you think! We would love to hear your thoughts on them, since we are working to build YOUR book!

Also coming soon on the Sneak Peek page, the 2009 cover! We still have to finish designing it, but once it's done, you will be among the first to know. And in the near future, our amazing webmaster Jon will be adding credits for who designed the pages you are seeing, so you can check them out.

So give it a look, tell us what you think and enjoy!

A Textbook Example

So here's an interesting tidbit. Two spreads (four pages) from the Razorback Yearbook have been featured in a textbook. The book is called Creative Editing and you can check it out on Amazon.com right here.

The publishers are working on a Canadian edition, and we got an email asking for our copyright permissions to use the pages. Of course, we agreed. Here's a picture of the pages in context, so you can see just what this book has to say about our work.

Anyways, it's pretty cool to think that the hard work of UA students is being put into a textbook for other students to use as an example. I'm not sure exactly what year these pages are from, although I know it's near 1993 since that's when Bud Walton opened. But I bet the yearbook staffers from back then would be proud to know their work was still being acknowledged.

And if you want a look at the new things coming from the Razorback staff, we have just put up some sneak peek pages from our 2009 book! You can check them out here on Facebook, or at the Sneak Peek page on our website. Be sure to let us know what you think!
