Something New: Archives

My new goal: Find yearbooks from the past and upload them to our "/archive" section.

Well kids, it's happening. Each week we're scanning and uploading more and more of past yearbooks. Johanna has been helping to speed up this process.

Right now I'm happy to report that we've scanned every cover that we have in the Yearbook Office. Yes, I know we're really low in some decades. Don't fear! Megan is searching out these missing books and I'm finding copies all across town.

Soon we'll start uploading pages from these magnificent books. You'll soon be able to read each book on the internet! Sounds like a migraine waiting to happen right? At first we'll be uploading interesting pages/spreads, but eventually we'll have everything on the site. Just give us time.

Do you have any copies? Send them our way!

In the meantime, check out our archive section and tell us what you think in the comments.

Get Your Photo On!

We'll be doing individual pictures for the yearbook outside the Union Food Court December 1st through the 5th. It's open to everyone (students, faculty, staff) and it's a great way to make sure you're in the 2009 Razorback. It's also a lot of fun!

Along with the individual pictures, we'll be taking candid shots individually or in groups. We'll have a "prop box" full of fun/goofy things to use. It's highly recommended you bring your own props as well.

To top off this day of picture taking, we're giving away a great door prize. We'll be drawing for a women's watch from Blakeman's Fine Jewelry in Rogers, a $240 value. Ladies, you want this. Gents, you want to give this to a special lady.

A slice of our history

Today, when Jon was in the Traveler office scanning past yearbook covers for the archive section of the site, he found a gem: a VERY well preserved edition of the 1907 Cardinal. From the founding of the yearbook in 1897 until it became the Razorback in 1916, the Arkansas book was called the Cardinal. (The Arkansas mascot was, in fact, the Cardinal until 1910.) Our oldest copy of any book is from 1911, and we have to keep it in an envelope to preserve the pages that aren't connected to one another anymore. Therefore, this was an amazing find.

It's so interesting to look back over our history as a publication and see how we've evolved. There are some past books we adore above others, and the 1907 book is now one of my favorites.
The "History of the Class of 1907," near the beginning of the book, starts with this paragraph:
The class of 1907, which is the largest in the history of the University, has had a very unique history. We have watched with pride the splendid growth of the University since we entered as Freshman in 1907. We have seen the student-body grow from 600 to 1,200. We have seen the campus filled with new buildings; and we hope yet to see greater things for our dear old 'Varsity.
It boggles my mind to read that. When I came to the UA as a freshman in the fall of 2006, the enrollment was nearly 18,000, and it continued to grow since then.
I've looked through this book with a sort of reverence, more than anything else. It's fascinating to be able to see a piece of our history that not many students ever do.
Jon is working on uploading scans of the covers of all the yearbooks we have from the past 101 years. Check it out in our archive section!

2008 Razorback arrives under cold temperatures / Distribution

"The slow ship from China" finally brought us the 2008 Razorback!

Last week, several of us staffers unloaded shrink-wrapped crates with the newest yearbook. Everyone was really excited. The books landed on the back dock of Kimpel.

Megan opened a few boxes.
And now we're going crazy with distribution. You can stop by our office (119L Kimpel) anytime to pick up a copy. Also, we'll be posted outside Brough Commons and the Arkansas Union distributing from 9:00am to 3:00pm Monday through Wednesday. Don't forget to sign up to win free textbooks for next semester. Sign up at one of our tables!
