WHO WE ARE
The Razorback is a completely student-run publication devoted to recording the events and people of the University of Arkansas. It is now in its 111th year, making it the oldest publication on campus.
Since 1897, the Razorback staff has been committed to documenting not only campus life and the college experience, but also the history of our institution. The yearbook records the life of a Razorback, capturing everything from pep rallies and study sessions to student organizations and athletics.
HOW WE GOT HERE
In 1894, at the age of 62, the former Confederate officer Dr. John L. Buchanan became president of the University. Under his administration the Board of Trustees appropriated $150 for the creation of the first yearbook, The Cardinal.
The book was originally put together by the junior class, and included humorous illustrations, inside jokes about classmates, favorite quotes from students and faculty and poems.
In 1909, in a story most students know, football coach Hugo Bezdek delivered his now infamous speech during which he told the crowd the team played "like a wild band of razorback hogs." In 1910, the student body voted to change the school's official mascot from the Cardinals to the Razorbacks. Six years later, the yearbook followed suit, changing its name from The Cardinal to The Razorback.
Over the years, The Razorback has evolved, from the small book published by the junior class to the 352-page record of the year it is today. Each book is reflective of the year it was produced, with books from the 70's including psychadelic fonts and photos of "Week of the Streak," when men and women ran naked through the streets, and eventually the football field. The books from the 80's include bright colors and photos of Governor Bill Clinton addressing students at commencement.
Today's yearbook includes photos and stories focusing on student life, academics, organizations, people, Greek life and sports. The book is produced entirely by a handful of students who work on staff, giving up their time and energy to create a lasting record of the year.
The Razorback continues to strive for excellence and has won many awards, bringing home more than 20 awards alone at the 2007 Arkansas College Media Association Awards. Most recently, the 2008 Razorback has been named a finalist for a Crown award, the highest honor given by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association for general excellence by a student publication.
